Coastal windstorms create unsteady, unpredictable storm surges in a fluvial Maine estuary

چکیده
Storm surges create coastal flooding that can be damaging to life and property. In estuaries with significant river influence (fluvial), it is possible for tides, storm surge, discharge interact enhance relative the immediate coast. These tide-surge-river interactions were previously identified in a fluvial Maine estuary as higher frequency (>four cycles per day) oscillations surge which proposed incited by enhanced friction resonance during certain windstorm events (Spicer et al. 2019). The contributions interaction from atmospheric forcing variables (wind, barometric pressure, externally generated surge) remains unclear. This work seeks decompose analyze recent event better isolate effects of on tidesurge- interaction. Results show total two times larger than at mouth because Analysis indicated least 50% magnitude are created non-tidal forcing, form wind, enhancing frictional energy estuary. remaining likely result changes tidal wave propagation speed due deepening mean water level.

Solar pacing of storm surges, coastal flooding and agricultural losses in the Central Mediterranean.
Storm surges, leading to catastrophic coastal flooding, are amongst the most feared natural hazards due to the high population densities and economic importance of littoral areas. Using the Central Mediterranean Sea as a model system, we provide strong evidence for enhanced periods of storminess leading to coastal flooding during the last 4500 years. We show that long-term correlations can be d...
متن کاملClimate Change and Storm Surges: Assessing Impacts on Your Coastal City Through Mike Flood Modeling
The effects of climate change on sea levels and coastal flooding are some of the most prevailing issues in the engineering industry today. In this study, a comprehensive procedure for detailed analysis of flooding from the sea under climate change conditions in a localized area was developed and applied. Through hydrodynamic and statistical modeling, detailed analysis of flooding from sea level...
متن کاملNonlinear chaotic model for predicting storm surges
This paper addresses the use of the methods of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory for building a predictive chaotic model from time series. The chaotic model predictions are made by the adaptive local models based on the dynamical neighbors found in the reconstructed phase space of the observables. We implemented the univariate and multivariate chaotic models with direct and multi-steps predic...

cated on the coast and 44% of the world’s population lives within 150 km of the ocean.1 Unfortunately, coastal regions are often low-lying and thus susceptible to an increase in seasurface elevation. A storm surge is a potentially devastating rise in the sea surface caused by extratropical cyclones or by tropical cyclones such as hurricanes and typhoons. Surges can lead to large loss of human l...
